24/7 Time-Critical and AOG Air Freight from Riga

Aircraft parts, line-stoppers, perishables and valuables on the next flight out, using the airlines' fastest products such as Lufthansa Cargo td.Zoom and Emergency.

By Unicore Overseas SIA team

Unicore takes time-critical and AOG (aircraft on ground) shipments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends, from and to Riga Airport (RIX). We book the cargo on the airline's fastest product: at Lufthansa Cargo that's td.Zoom, with the Emergency add-on when the uplift has to be guaranteed. With Turkish Cargo, Finnair Cargo and LOT Cargo we use their priority products. New York is seven hours and Los Angeles ten hours behind Riga, so cargo that leaves Riga on a morning flight can land in the US on the same date.

Time-critical is a speed, not a type of cargo. General cargo, dangerous goods, perishables and valuables can all be urgent, but each airline limits which of them can fly on its fastest product. The tables below show where those limits sit and what we do when the flights are full. For courier parcels and small packages, see our express shipping guide.

Key Facts

  • Unicore takes time-critical and AOG (aircraft on ground) shipments 24/7, including weekends, from and to Riga Airport (RIX).
  • Lufthansa Cargo has three speeds: td.Pro (economy), td.Flash (priority) and td.Zoom (fastest, with 24/7 monitoring and replanning).
  • td.Zoom takes general cargo, dangerous goods, passive temperature-controlled cargo and vulnerables; perishables, valuables and live animals fly td.Flash at most.
  • Lufthansa Cargo's Emergency add-on (since September 2026) guarantees uplift and refunds its charge if the cargo is over 6 hours late against the promised time of availability.
  • On days LH893 flies (06:05 from Riga), cargo connecting in Frankfurt lands in Los Angeles at 13:05 and New York (JFK) at 13:35 local time the same day.
  • Turkish Cargo books AOG shipments as TK Urgent, its top tier with a capacity guarantee even on closed flights and Istanbul connections from 2 hours.

1. What we ship as time-critical

Most urgent shipments we handle fall into one of these situations. The last column shows what we usually book with Lufthansa Cargo; with other airlines we pick the equivalent product.

2. Lufthansa Cargo speeds: td.Pro, td.Flash and td.Zoom

Lufthansa Cargo builds every booking from three parts: a Product (the type of cargo, such as General Cargo or Dangerous Goods), a Speed and, if needed, an add-on service. There are three Speeds, and they differ in how sure the cargo is to get on the flight and how fast it moves through the hub.

Which cargo can fly at which speed

td.Zoom isn't open to every kind of cargo. Perishables and active temperature-controlled containers fly at td.Flash at most, and Valuables and Live Animals only at td.Flash. Passive temperature-controlled cargo can fly td.Zoom, but it gets no cold storage at the hubs, so the packaging has to hold the temperature on its own. Exceptions can apply for some commodities and routings.

The Emergency add-on

Emergency is Lufthansa Cargo's add-on for exceptional situations, available since September 2026. It can be added to a td.Flash or td.Zoom booking for General Cargo, Dangerous Goods and Vulnerables, and for Passive Temp Support with td.Zoom only.

  • Guaranteed uplift on the booked flight, even when we book at short notice.
  • Access to the booked flight's freight capacity up to its maximum.
  • If the cargo is more than 6 hours late against the promised time of availability (TOA), Lufthansa Cargo refunds the Emergency charge.
  • It's a Lufthansa Cargo product, so we book the whole route on a Lufthansa Cargo (020) air waybill.

3. Landing in New York and Los Angeles the same day

The time difference works for you. Cargo that leaves Riga on the first Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt makes a midday transatlantic departure and lands in the US in the early afternoon, local time, on the same date.

  • In the winter 2026/27 season LH893 flies on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On other days the first Lufthansa flight is LH891 at 14:35, and the cargo lands in the US the next day.
  • Cargo for the 06:05 flight usually has to be at Lufthansa's handling agent in Riga the evening before.
  • The Riga–Frankfurt leg is an A320, so the cargo travels as loose pieces in the hold, with no pallets or containers. Large parts or engines need a truck to Frankfurt or a freighter.
  • "Same day" means the aircraft lands that day. US import clearance and delivery to the door come after that, so we agree the handover time with the consignee.
  • Finnair can't do it from Riga: the Helsinki flights are ATR 72s, which FIRST doesn't cover, so the cargo goes to Helsinki by truck and lands in the US the next day at the earliest. Via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, Los Angeles is also next day.

Local times from the winter 2026/27 schedules, checked on 2 October 2026. US arrival times apply from 1 November; between 25 and 31 October they are one hour later. Airlines change schedules, so we check the flight before booking.

4. Priority products at Turkish Cargo, Finnair Cargo and LOT Cargo

5. When the flights are full: on-board courier, charter, truck to a hub

Riga has fewer flights than Frankfurt or Helsinki, and most of them are narrowbody aircraft with small holds. If the next flights are full, or the pieces won't fit, there are three ways round it.

On-board courier (OBC)

A courier flies as a passenger and the cargo travels as their baggage. It suits small AOG parts, samples and documents that fit baggage size and weight limits and aren't dangerous goods. The cargo reaches the consignee a few hours after landing.

Air charter

A small freighter or business jet flies when the cargo is ready. It's the most expensive option, and sometimes the only one for an engine, a large part or a destination without scheduled flights.

Express van to a hub

A dedicated van with two drivers takes the cargo to Warsaw, Helsinki or Frankfurt, where there are more flights and widebody aircraft. The airlines' own RFS trucks run on a fixed timetable, so for urgent cargo they're rarely the fastest way.

Before booking we check that each piece fits the aircraft's cargo door and hold. You can check it yourself with our aircraft cargo compatibility checker.

6. AOG shipments: documents and dangerous goods

AOG means an aircraft can't fly until a part is replaced. Every hour on the ground costs the operator money, so we send these parts on the first available flight. The paperwork has to be right before departure, though, or the part gets stuck at customs or at acceptance.

  • An invoice or pro forma invoice with the part number, serial number and value.
  • The release certificate, usually EASA Form 1 or FAA 8130-3. Parts for civil aircraft can qualify for EU customs duty relief when the certificate travels with the part, so we check it before the cargo lands.
  • A Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD) if the part contains hazardous material. Aircraft parts often do: lithium batteries, fire extinguisher bottles, escape slides with gas cylinders, engines and pumps with fuel residue. Chemical oxygen generators may fly on cargo aircraft only. Unicore is IATA DGR certified and prepares the declaration itself, see our dangerous goods guide.
  • A consignee contact who can be reached at night, and the exact delivery point, such as a hangar or the aircraft stand.

For AOG parts flown into Riga, we start customs clearance while the cargo is still in the air. See customs clearance at Riga Airport for how that works.

7. How to book an urgent shipment with us

  1. 1Call, email or chat and tell us about the cargo (what we need is listed below). Out of office hours, call: an email can sit until morning.
  2. 2We check flights and space on every leg and come back with options and a price, usually within the hour.
  3. 3Once you confirm, we book the flight (td.Zoom, Emergency or the equivalent), send a van for pickup and prepare the air waybill, export declaration and DGD if needed.
  4. 4The cargo is screened for security and delivered to the airline's warehouse before the latest acceptance time. Cargo from a known consignor skips the screening step.
  5. 5We follow the shipment until it is delivered and tell you at each step: departure, transfer at the hub, arrival, customs release and delivery.

What we need to get started

  • What the goods are, and the HS code if you have it
  • Number of pieces, weight and dimensions of each piece
  • Whether it contains batteries, liquids, gas or other DG
  • Pickup address and the time the cargo is ready
  • Delivery address and the latest time it is needed
  • Value, and whether the goods are already customs cleared

Frequently asked questions

What is an AOG shipment?

AOG (aircraft on ground) is a shipment of a part or tool that an aircraft needs before it can fly again. Unicore books AOG parts 24/7 on the next flight out of Riga, usually Lufthansa Cargo td.Zoom with the Emergency add-on, or sends them with an on-board courier when the part is small and the flights are full. Turkish Cargo also handles AOG bookings as TK Urgent through its TK Aero service. We check the release certificate (EASA Form 1 or FAA 8130-3) and prepare the dangerous goods declaration if the part needs one.

Can a shipment from Riga arrive in New York or Los Angeles the same day?

Yes, on the days the early Lufthansa flight operates. In the winter 2026/27 schedule LH893 leaves Riga at 06:05 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and lands in Frankfurt at 07:30. From there LH456 lands in Los Angeles at 13:05 and LH400 in New York (JFK) at 13:35, local time, on the same date. On other days, or via Turkish Airlines through Istanbul to Los Angeles, the cargo lands the next day. Same day means the aircraft lands that day: US customs clearance and delivery follow.

Which airlines flying from Riga have a premium product for urgent cargo?

Lufthansa Cargo has td.Flash and td.Zoom, plus the Emergency add-on. Turkish Cargo has TK Urgent and TK Premium, and handles AOG through TK Aero. Finnair Cargo has FIRST and LOT Cargo has SUPER. airBaltic has no separate premium product, but its direct flights from Riga are often the quickest way within Europe. Unicore books all of them and picks the one that gets the cargo there first.

What is the difference between Lufthansa Cargo td.Flash and td.Zoom?

td.Flash is Lufthansa Cargo's priority speed: it gets capacity ahead of td.Pro, has a capacity guarantee for urgent shipments up to 500 kg and shorter handling in Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Brussels. td.Zoom is the fastest speed: bookings are confirmed immediately within the capacity guarantee with no weight limit, it's handled at the time:matters Courier Terminal in Frankfurt, can be transferred tail-to-tail on request, and a 24/7 team monitors and replans it. td.Zoom is open to General Cargo, Dangerous Goods, Passive Temp Support and Vulnerables, but not to Perishables, Valuables or Live Animals.

What does the Lufthansa Cargo Emergency add-on give you?

Emergency, available since September 2026, is an add-on to a td.Flash or td.Zoom booking that guarantees uplift on the booked flight, even at short notice, with access to the flight's freight capacity up to its maximum. If the cargo is more than 6 hours late against the promised time of availability (TOA), Lufthansa Cargo refunds the Emergency charge. It covers General Cargo, Dangerous Goods and Vulnerables, and Passive Temp Support with td.Zoom only.

Can perishables and valuables be shipped as time-critical cargo?

Yes, but not always on the fastest tier. At Lufthansa Cargo, Perishables fly on td.Pro or td.Flash and Valuables only on td.Flash, so we book td.Flash and plan the shortest connection. Theft-prone goods below the valuables threshold, such as high-value electronics, can fly as Vulnerables on td.Zoom.

What happens if there is no space on the next flights from Riga?

We check the other airlines flying from Riga, then three fallbacks: an on-board courier for small parts that fit baggage limits, a charter flight, or a dedicated van with two drivers to Warsaw, Helsinki or Frankfurt, where there are more flights and widebody aircraft.

How much does time-critical air freight cost?

Premium speeds and the Emergency add-on cost noticeably more than standard air freight, and for small AOG parts the airline's minimum charge per shipment usually sets the price. We quote each shipment on the day, because the price depends on the airline, the route, the weight and how close to departure we book.

Do you really take urgent shipments 24/7?

Yes. Unicore takes time-critical and AOG shipments at any hour, including weekends and public holidays. Call +371 67432525: out of office hours a phone call reaches the person on duty faster than an email.

Aircraft on the ground or a line down?

Call us at any hour. We'll tell you which flight the cargo can make and when it will arrive.

Product names, conditions and flight times are as the airlines published them in October 2026. They can change, so we confirm the current conditions with every booking.
