Why does this matter?
Imagine shipping 100 kg of lead vs 100 kg of cotton. The cotton takes up much more space, so the airline charges based on volume, not weight.

How to calculate air freight cost per kg: a chargeable weight example
Unicore, like the airlines, charges air freight on the chargeable weight: the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight. For general air cargo the volumetric divisor is 6000 (1:6000), so every cubic metre counts as at least 167 kg. The two shipments below show the calculation step by step, in kilograms and centimetres only.
Light, bulky cargo: 5 cartons, each 80 × 60 × 50 cm and 18 kg
- Volume of one carton: 80 × 60 × 50 = 240,000 cm³
- Volumetric weight of one carton: 240,000 ÷ 6000 = 40 kg
- Volumetric weight of the shipment: 5 × 40 = 200 kg
- Actual weight of the shipment: 5 × 18 = 90 kg
- Chargeable weight: the greater of 200 kg and 90 kg = 200 kg
The airline charges this shipment as 200 kg, although it weighs 90 kg, so the +100 kg weight break applies.
Dense cargo: 1 pallet, 120 × 80 × 100 cm and 350 kg
- Volume of the pallet, including its base: 120 × 80 × 100 = 960,000 cm³
- Volumetric weight: 960,000 ÷ 6000 = 160 kg
- Actual weight: 350 kg
- Chargeable weight: the greater of 350 kg and 160 kg = 350 kg
The pallet is denser than 167 kg per cubic metre, so it is charged on its actual weight of 350 kg.
From chargeable weight to price
Air freight charge = chargeable weight (kg) × the rate per kg for that weight break, or the minimum charge if that is higher
Airlines round the chargeable weight up to the next half kilogram and measure each piece at its longest, widest and highest point, pallet included. Per-kg surcharges come on top (on chargeable or actual weight, depending on the airline), followed by fixed fees per air waybill or per customs declaration. Air freight surcharges and fees: who charges each one
On top of the airline's base rate, a Unicore air freight quote can include the charges below. The amounts depend on the airline, the airports and the shipment, so the table shows only who charges each one; typical ranges are in the FAQ below.

Weight Breaks & Saving Money
In air freight, the principle applies: the higher the weight, the lower the rate per kg. This means sometimes it's cheaper to declare a higher weight to qualify for the next price bracket.
The Pivot Weight Secret
If you have 40kg cargo, but the +45kg rate is significantly lower, it might be cheaper to pay for 45kg (even if shipping only 40kg) than to pay the high -45kg rate.
What moves air freight rates per kg
When Unicore prices an air shipment, these six factors move the rate per kg the most.
Season
Rates rise when demand peaks: before Chinese New Year, in the Black Friday and pre-Christmas weeks, and when sea freight is disrupted and shippers move to air. Space sells out first on the busiest lanes, so book a week or more ahead in these periods.
Lane and direction
Each lane has its own rate, and demand matters more than distance. Where more cargo flies one way than the other, the busy direction costs more: Asia to Europe is the headhaul, while exports from Riga to China fly on the cheaper backhaul.
Density
Cargo lighter than 167 kg per cubic metre is charged on its volume, so light, bulky goods cost more per actual kilogram. Smaller cartons, less empty space and stackable pallets lower the chargeable weight. Pieces that cannot be stacked can be charged for the space above them.
Urgency
Next-flight-out bookings and airline premium products such as Lufthansa td.Flash or Turkish TK Urgent cost more than standard consolidated service, and same-day bookings leave fewer flights to choose from. If the delivery date allows, Unicore's standard uFAST service is the cheaper option.
Dangerous goods
Lithium batteries, chemicals, aerosols and other dangerous goods need a shipper's declaration, DG packing and the airline's acceptance check, and some may fly only on cargo aircraft. That narrows the choice of flights and adds charges. Unicore is IATA DGR certified, and acceptance has to be checked for every leg, including truck legs.
Routing via hubs
Most long-haul cargo from Riga connects through an airline hub such as Frankfurt (FRA), Istanbul (IST), Helsinki (HEL) or Warsaw (WAW), on a feeder flight or on an RFS truck that runs under the airline's flight number. A routing through a hub can cost less than a more direct option, but each transfer adds time, and a truck leg to or from the hub often takes 1 to 3 days.

How is the chargeable weight for air freight calculated?
Unicore calculates it the same way as the airlines: chargeable weight = max(actual kg, volumetric kg). Volumetric kg = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 6000. Example: a 60×40×30 cm box weighing 5 kg → 72,000/6000 = 12 kg volumetric, charged at 12 kg. The 6000 divisor is the IATA standard for general air cargo, so 1 m³ counts as 167 kg. Express couriers use 5000 as the divisor, which yields a higher chargeable weight for the same dimensions.
Are there minimum charges or weight thresholds for air freight from Riga?
Yes, and Unicore checks both before quoting: most airlines apply a minimum charge of €40–€80 per AWB regardless of weight (for shipments under ~10 kg). Rates change at break weights — typical thresholds are +45 kg, +100 kg, +300 kg, +500 kg and +1000 kg, and the per-kg price drops at each step. A 95 kg shipment is sometimes cheaper to declare as 100 kg to access the lower rate.
How fast will my cargo reach its destination?

What is a 'spot rate' and when should I use it?
A spot rate is a one-off price that an airline gives Unicore for one specific shipment, based on the space available at the time. It pays off mainly for larger shipments (over 100 kg or 500 kg) and non-standard routes, where it can come in below the standard rate for that weight break. In busy weeks and for same-day bookings, spot rates can be higher than contract rates.
Is cargo insurance included in the air freight price?
No: Unicore, like most forwarders, quotes cargo insurance separately from standard air freight, and the airline's liability is limited (26 SDR per kg, about €31). Unicore recommends additional cargo insurance for valuable goods.
