Cargo from Latvia to the USA moves three ways: by air freight from Riga Airport RIX (3–7 days door-to-door), by express courier (2–4 days), or by ocean freight from Riga port (FCL container 20–30 days, LCL consolidation 25–35 days). An IATA-certified forwarder in Riga arranges the entire chain: pickup anywhere in Latvia, the export customs declaration, US import filing and door delivery to the consignee. For urgent cargo, same-week air uplift is available — Unicore Overseas provides a quote within 30 minutes.

Need to Send Urgent Cargo to the USA?

If your cargo must reach the USA this week or next, the answer is urgent air freight from Riga Airport (RIX). There are no direct freighter flights from Riga to the USA, so cargo connects through European hubs — Frankfurt (FRA), Amsterdam (AMS) or Istanbul (IST) — with onward flights to New York (JFK), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX) and other US gateways. A well-run urgent shipment looks like this:

  • Quote within 30 minutes — for urgent requests we immediately check available capacity on the next flights.
  • Same-week uplift: cargo that is ready and documented by Wednesday usually flies by the weekend and reaches the US consignee within 3–7 days door-to-door.
  • Cut-offs: cargo and export documents typically need to be at the RIX cargo terminal 24–48 hours before departure; for dangerous goods, 48–72 hours in advance.
  • What speeds clearance: an accurate commercial invoice with HS codes, the consignee's US EIN number, a customs bond arranged in advance, and a complete packing specification. Missing data is the most common cause of delay.

A practical example: a spare part for a production line, 120 kg, from Jelgava to a plant in New Jersey — pickup Monday, departure from RIX via Frankfurt on Wednesday, US customs clearance Thursday, delivery Friday. Five days in total.

How the Process Works: Step by Step

  1. Enquiry and booking. You send the cargo details (weight, dimensions, commodity, US destination), we quote and, on confirmation, book space on the flight or vessel.
  2. Pickup (EXW/FCA). We collect cargo anywhere in Latvia — Riga, Liepaja, Daugavpils or a rural production site — and deliver it to the RIX cargo terminal or Riga port.
  3. Export customs declaration (EX-A). We prepare and file the export declaration with Latvian customs using your EORI number. Exports from the EU to the USA carry no export duty, but the declaration is mandatory.
  4. AWB or B/L issuance. For air cargo we issue the air waybill (AWB); for sea, the bill of lading (B/L). For ocean shipments we also file the ISF “10+2” data with US customs before loading.
  5. US arrival. Cargo arrives at the US airport (JFK, ORD, LAX) or seaport (New York, Norfolk, Savannah). Our Lognet Global partner receives pre-arrival documents before the cargo lands.
  6. US customs entry. The US customs broker files the customs entry with CBP, calculates duties under the HTS code and secures release. Most shipments clear within 24–48 hours.
  7. Door delivery. The Lognet Global partner network handles last-mile delivery in any US state — to a warehouse, factory or Amazon FBA centre.

US Import Requirements Explained Simply

The US side raises the most questions for Latvian exporters. Here are the five things to understand before your first shipment:

  • Importer of Record and EIN. Every shipment needs an official US importer with an EIN (Employer Identification Number) — usually your US buyer. If you sell on DDP terms, we can arrange foreign importer of record status.
  • Customs bond. Mandatory for all commercial imports over $2,500. A single-entry bond covers one shipment; a continuous bond (≈ $400–600 per year) pays off from as few as 3–4 shipments a year.
  • ISF “10+2” for ocean cargo. The Importer Security Filing must reach US customs AT LEAST 24 hours BEFORE the container is loaded on the vessel in Europe. A late or incorrect ISF risks a $5,000 penalty. We file it automatically for every ocean shipment.
  • Duties under HTS and Section 301. The US import duty depends on the 10-digit HTS code — many EU-origin goods fall in the 0–6.5% range. Caution: goods of Chinese origin re-exported via Latvia are still subject to Section 301 additional tariffs based on origin, not the country of dispatch.
  • FDA, FCC and other agencies. Food, cosmetics, medical products and supplements require FDA registration and prior notice; electronics with radio modules need an FCC declaration of conformity. We check these requirements at the quoting stage.

Dangerous Goods to the USA: Flammable Liquids and Other DG Cargo

Yes — flammable liquids (Class 3: paints, lacquers, solvents, alcohols, adhesives, alcohol-based cosmetics) can be shipped from Latvia to the USA, but only with correct classification, packaging and documentation. Unicore Overseas is an IATA DGR certified dangerous goods forwarder — we prepare all DG documentation for you.

By air — under IATA DGR

  • Cargo must be packed in UN-specification certified packaging with correct marks and Class 3 hazard labels.
  • A Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods signed by a DGR-trained person is required — we prepare and execute it.
  • Small volumes can use relief provisions: limited quantities and excepted quantities, which significantly reduce cost and formalities.
  • Some flammable liquids (Packing Group II and I in larger quantities) are Cargo Aircraft Only (CAO) — this affects routing and price, as cargo must move on freighter flights via FRA or IST.

By sea — under the IMDG Code

For larger volumes (drums, IBCs, palletised lots) sea transport under the IMDG Code is usually 3–5 times cheaper than air. It requires a Multimodal Dangerous Goods Form, UN-certified packaging and a container packing certificate. Book earlier — shipping lines approve DG cargo within 5–10 working days.

Classification always starts with the safety data sheet (SDS) — from it we determine the UN number, packing group and flash point. Send us the SDS and within 30 minutes we will tell you whether and how your product can ship to the USA. Read more in our guide What are dangerous goods?

What is the fastest way to send urgent cargo from Latvia to the USA?

The fastest options are express courier (2–4 days door-to-door) or urgent air freight from Riga Airport (RIX) via European hubs such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Istanbul — typically 3–7 days door-to-door with same-week uplift. Unicore provides a quote within 30 minutes for urgent requests.

How much does air freight from Riga to the USA cost?

Indicatively €3.50–6.00 per kg (chargeable weight) in 2026 to major US gateways such as New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX) or Chicago (ORD), plus pickup in Latvia, export customs and US-side charges. Rates change weekly — request a live quote for an exact price.

Can I ship flammable liquids from Latvia to the USA?

Yes. Class 3 flammable liquids ship by air under IATA DGR rules (UN-specification packaging, Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods, possible cargo-aircraft-only restrictions) or by sea under the IMDG Code. A safety data sheet (SDS) is required for classification. Unicore is IATA DGR certified and prepares all dangerous goods documentation for you.

How long does sea freight from Riga to the US East Coast take?

FCL containers from Riga to US East Coast ports (New York, Norfolk, Savannah) typically take 20–30 days port-to-port; LCL takes 25–35 days because of consolidation and deconsolidation. Add 5–10 days for door pickup, export customs, US customs entry and final delivery.

What documents do I need to export from Latvia to the USA?

The core set: commercial invoice, packing list, export declaration (EX-A) filed with Latvian customs, your EORI number, and the air waybill (AWB) or bill of lading (B/L). Depending on the goods you may also need a certificate of origin, FDA/FCC compliance data or a dual-use export licence check. Unicore prepares and files all export documents before departure.
