Air Import Taipei to Riga: 83 Cartons of Knit Fabric on Lufthansa

The Challenge

A Lithuanian freight forwarder was importing knit fabric from Taiwan for a garment maker in Latvia and had no import handling of its own at Riga airport. The lot was heavy for its size: 83 cartons of 36 × 36 × 36 cm made up 3.87 m³ and only 645 kg volumetric, but weighed 2,030 kg gross, so the booking would be charged on actual weight and needed a scheduled carrier able to lift two tonnes out of Taipei. On arrival the cargo had to go through terminal handling at RIX, an import declaration in Latvia and delivery to the consignee. The forwarder wanted one partner on the Riga side to take responsibility for all of it, and the arrangement had to hold for a second, smaller lot on the same lane in the same month.

How Unicore Handled It

• Booked the 83 cartons as air freight on Lufthansa Cargo from Taipei Songshan (TSA) to Riga (RIX), rated on the 2,030 kg actual weight because it exceeded the 645 kg volumetric weight.
• Arranged terminal handling and cargo handling at RIX on arrival, taking the consignment over from the airline at the Riga cargo terminal.
• Lodged the import customs declaration in Latvia for the knit fabric, acting as the Lithuanian forwarder's import agent in Riga.
• Delivered the cleared cargo from the airport to the consignee, a garment maker in Latvia.
• Ran the same booking, handling and clearance sequence for a second lot on the lane in the same month: 12 cartons, 243 kg.

The Result

• 83 cartons, 2,030 kg of knit fabric flown from Taipei to Riga on Lufthansa Cargo and delivered to the consignee.
• Terminal handling, import declaration and delivery in Latvia handled by one Riga partner on behalf of the Lithuanian forwarder.
• Two shipments on the Taipei → Riga lane in August 2026: 83 cartons / 2,030 kg and 12 cartons / 243 kg, the second booked the same way.
