Rail Freight from China to Latvia
Faster than sea, cheaper than air. Full process, indicative cost ranges and transit times from China to Riga via the Warsaw Mala terminal (Małaszewicze, Poland).
Rail freight from China to Latvia has become an attractive option for importers who find ocean freight too slow and air cargo too expensive. Typical transit time is 18–25 days — 2–3× faster than sea and 60–80% cheaper than air. Unicore Overseas has run this lane for years through a trusted Chinese freight forwarder and our own team in Latvia, providing full door-to-door service to the customer's warehouse in Riga.
When Rail Makes Sense
- Sea (40–55 days) is too slow, but air (5–10 days) is too expensive.
- Mid-value cargo — electronics, machinery spare parts, textiles, e-commerce replenishment.
- LCL volume (1–15 CBM) or small FCL where you want the right balance of speed and cost.
- Seasonal or campaign cargo with a hard deadline.

Chinese Origins Served
We offer regular weekly LCL consolidations from the following Chinese origins via Warsaw Mala station in Poland:
- Chengdu (CTU) — central China, the most established China–Europe rail origin
- Shenzhen (SZX) — South China, electronics manufacturing hub
- Guangzhou (CAN) — Pearl River Delta, mass-production goods
- Shanghai (SHA) — largest port + manufacturing region
- Ningbo (NGB) — Zhejiang region, chemicals and textiles
Main operators on these lanes are CRCT (China Railway Container Transport), DB Cargo Eurasia and PKP Cargo on the European leg. Wagons cross Russia or Kazakhstan and enter Poland via the Małaszewicze terminal (Mala station) — the EU's main 1520 mm ↔ 1435 mm gauge transshipment point on the Belarusian border.
Indicative Cost Ranges (LCL, per CBM)
⚠️ Indicative ranges only — rates change almost weekly (Yuan/USD/EUR FX, rail capacity, seasonal peaks). Always request a live quote — we respond in under 1 hour.
1. FOB China → Warsaw Mala
| Origin | Indicative range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FOB Chengdu | ≈ 100–135 USD/CBM | Generally the lowest band |
| FOB Shenzhen | ≈ 120–155 USD/CBM | Standard rate, no light-cargo discount |
| FOB Guangzhou | ≈ 115–150 USD/CBM | Better rate available for light cargo |
| FOB Shanghai | ≈ 115–150 USD/CBM | Better rate available for light cargo |
| FOB Ningbo | ≈ 115–150 USD/CBM | Better rate available for light cargo |
Rates above are base rates to Warsaw Mala station (POD). FOB means loading and Chinese export customs are included. Light cargo (under ~250 kg/CBM) may qualify for a slightly lower rate at certain terminals. The pricing pivot for rail LCL is 1 CBM = 333 kg — denser cargo is charged on actual weight.
2. Warsaw → Riga (truck, T1 transit)
Indicatively ≈ 140–170 EUR/CBM. We pick up cargo at Warsaw Mala terminal and deliver to Riga under a T1 customs transit document. The distance is about 720 km, drive time 10–12 hours, typically a single-day move.
3. Riga terminal – handling
Indicatively ≈ 15–30 EUR/CBM. Includes unloading, short storage (typically 2–5 days), and preparation for customs clearance or release.
4. Import customs & declaration
From around 80 EUR per shipment. We prepare and file the import declaration, calculate duties and VAT (Latvia's standard rate is 21%) and release goods into EU free circulation. For full documentation detail see our China import customs documents guide. If the customer has their own broker, we hand over documents and the customer clears customs themselves.
5. Last-mile delivery
After clearance we deliver to the customer's warehouse anywhere in Latvia. Price depends on distance and cargo size — usually included in the quote as a single door-to-door rate so there are no surprises.
How the Process Works (9 Steps)
- Customer enquiry. We receive the enquiry — origin, destination, approximate volume/weight, readiness date.
- Indicative quote. Our Chinese forwarder publishes weekly LCL rates from 5 origins — we can immediately tell whether rail fits your price range.
- Booking placed. After customer confirmation, we book the train slot and pass the order to our Chinese forwarder.
- Shipper contact. Our Chinese forwarder contacts the shipper and arranges FOB services — pickup, export customs, loading into the wagon.
- Volume & readiness. We receive exact volume, weight and readiness date — and forward this to the customer immediately.
- Final confirmation. We confirm the booking with all parties — customer, Chinese forwarder and rail operator.
- Warsaw ETA. We receive the planned arrival date at Warsaw Mala and book the truck to Riga for that date.
- Move to Riga. On arrival in Warsaw we pick up cargo and ship it to Riga under T1 customs transit.
- Arrival in Riga & release. We notify the customer, clear customs (or hand documents to the customer's broker) and deliver to the customer's premises.
Rail vs Sea vs Air (China → Riga)
| Mode | Transit | Indicative price range (LCL) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea (LCL) | 40–55 days | ≈ 70–110 USD/CBM | High volume, no deadline |
| Rail (LCL) | 18–25 days | ≈ 100–155 USD/CBM + Riga last-mile | Mid-value, mid-urgency |
| Air | 5–10 days | ≈ 5–8 USD/kg (≈ 500–800 USD/CBM) | Urgent, high-value |
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is rail transit from China to Riga?
Typically 18–25 days from loading in China to delivery in Riga, including handling at Warsaw Mala terminal and T1 transit to Latvia.
Is rail cheaper than sea?
No — rail is usually 30–60% more expensive than sea per CBM, but it is 2–3× faster. Choose rail when speed matters more than the lowest possible price.
Why does cargo route via Warsaw instead of directly to Riga?
The main China–Europe rail terminal sits in Poland (Małaszewicze / Mala station near Warsaw) and offers the most frequent and stable connections — this is where wagons are re-gauged from 1520 mm to 1435 mm. The final leg to Riga is done by truck under T1 customs transit.
Can my company use its own customs broker?
Yes. We hand over all documents to your broker in Riga and you clear customs yourself. However, most customers prefer that we file the import declaration — it simplifies the process and reduces delays.
What volumes can be shipped — LCL or FCL?
Both. LCL consolidation (from 1 CBM) suits smaller shipments and is available from all listed Chinese origins. FCL (20'/40' container) makes sense once volume exceeds 15–18 CBM or for dense / specialty cargo.
Can I track my rail shipment in real time?
Yes. You receive status updates at every key milestone: loading in China, transshipment at Mala, departure from Warsaw, arrival in Riga and delivery. Major operators (CRCT, DB Cargo) provide wagon-level tracking which we forward to you on request.
What documents do I need for rail freight from China to Latvia?
Standard set: commercial invoice, packing list, rail waybill (CIM/SMGS), certificate of origin (if FTA applies), and a T1 transit document for the Mala–Riga leg. We prepare and verify all paperwork before loading to avoid customs delays at the EU border.
Is rail safe for fragile electronics?
Yes. Containers on rail wagons are more stable than on a vessel (less pitch and roll) and avoid the acceleration loads of air cargo. We recommend proper internal packing and verify load distribution in the container. For high-value electronics we always offer cargo insurance — see our cargo insurance guide.
